President-elect Joe Biden named his White House communication team on Tuesday. The all-female group includes a Press Secretary, a Communications Director, a Principal Deputy Press Secretary, and a Senior Adviser and Chief Spokeswoman for Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, among others.
This will be the first time in history that the White House communications team will be made entirely of women.
Biden has chosen a diverse group of women with a variety of backgrounds to lead his administration in communicating with the country.
Jennifer Psaki, his soon-to-be Press Secretary, previously worked as a White House Communications Director and State Department Spokeswoman under the Obama Administration. Psaki hopes to bring back daily press briefings, which will be important as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, especially with the emergence of a vaccine.
Symone D. Sanders will serve as a Senior Adviser and Chief Spokeswoman for Kamala Harris. Sanders worked on the Biden-Harris campaign as a Senior Adviser. She previously worked as National Press Secretary for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 Presidential Campaign.
Having a large, diverse group of women leading Biden’s cabinet is no small feat. Other than his communications team, the President-elect has also named Janet Yellen to be the first ever female Tresury Secretary and Linda Thomas-Greenfield to be the Ambassador to the United Nations.
This picks will allow more women to have a voice in policy making and other government decisions that will be made. This is particularly important in departments where decisions will be made that directly affect women, such as healthcare.
Biden and his Administration are expected to continue to make plans and decisions for their presidency until inauguration on January 21, 2021.
