As of today, the finale of the newest Walking Dead spinoff, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, has come out. I have been following this series since it started and have enjoyed it more than the other Walking Dead spin offs that have been released both as the original show was coming out and after it finished.
While at times the show falls back into some of the original show’s pitfalls, it does interesting things with its story and characters, and adds to the world established in the previous shows. By focusing on a single character, Daryl, and having him go on a journey in France, the show has a strong start to it, and mostly keeps to it.
By using the variant Walkers that were underused in the other shows, elaborating on that concept, and giving the viewers more body horror and mad science through that, we see the bigger picture of this franchise’s world coming into better view. I also liked finally getting to see what happened to the rest of the world after civilization collapses.
Also, I liked that the series showed people having to improvise older weaponry as there aren’t as many resources to go around after years and years. The characters also are pretty good, and get to have pretty good arcs throughout the show. Norman Reedus gets to play Daryl again and do more with the character than he has before as he contends with both warrior nuns and a corrupt government force as he tries to get home.
Overall, while people that aren’t as big a fan of the series might not enjoy it, anyone who wanted more out of the newer spinoffs will like what it does with the mythos. I highly recommend watching it.
