Earlier this week, the Golden State Warriors took on the Los Angeles Clippers in a nearly season battle that didn’t disappoint. The game ended in dramatic fashion as the Clippers handed the Warriors their third loss of the season.
At the end of regulation is where the drama started, but was far from being over with. The game was tied at 106-106 and Draymond Green corralled a rebound off of a Lou Williams missed jumper. There was just over five seconds left when Draymond came down with the ball and decided to take the ball up court. Also on the floor was Kevin Durant who was demanding for the ball, yet Green ignored him. Green pushed the ball up the floor where he eventually lost control of it and time ran out. The Warriors ended up losing in overtime, 121-116.
In between the end of regulation and the start of overtime Green and Durant got into a heated argument over Green’s decision not to give up the ball. This altercation bled into the locker room post game and has gained a lot of attention since, not to anyone’s surprise.
To me, this is almost a non-story. Obviously tension within an organization is far from ideal, but this team is far from ordinary. This is the Golden State Warriors we’re talking about. This is a team who has won three out of the last four championships and is most likely on their way to their fourth in five years. This is a team where once Demarcus Cousins comes back from injury, will have a starting lineup filled with five all-stars. This has never been seen before.
Teams such as the Warriors understand how to deal with situations like this and have gone through them before. There has been numerous times where Green has lashed out at his teammates but it has never affected them negatively in the long run. If anything, it’s made them better as a unit. Green, throughout his career, has been a super passionate player on and off of the court, something he will never shy away from.
Obviously, none of us were inside the locker room to hear what was being said between the two, so it is hard to determine just how deep the words cut. However, I would like to think that the two will be able to fix this issue and sweep everything under the rug.
In any sport, winning means everything and in the end, it is the ultimate antidote. This squad wins, and they do it at a extremely high rate. I see them going on a big win streak within the next few weeks and this story will start to be talked about less and less as the season progresses.
Sit back and think about the deodorant you use every morning. Deodorant? Yes. That’s what wins will represent in this whole situation. Wins will mask any problems this team has already had or will encounter throughout the season. All I am going to say is that I think the rest of the NBA is going to be smelling a whole lot of deodorant the rest of the season.
