Last Sunday, the 92nd Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California to recognize the year’s best performances on the silver screen.
The show once again had no host, and singer Janelle Monáe opened the show with an original song about this year’s best films.
Taking home the most awards was “Parasite” with four wins. The Korean film was directed by Bong Joon-ho, who lead the film to win Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, as well as the night’s top prize, Best Picture. The film also made history by becoming the first non-English language film to win Best Picture.
Best Actor and Actress in a Leading Role were won by Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) and Renée Zellweger (“Judy”), respectively. In addition, the awards for supporting actors were given to Brad Pitt for his role in “Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood”, and Laura Dern for her role in “Marriage Story”.
The award for Best Adapted Screenplay was given to New Zealander actor/director Taika Waititi for “Jojo Rabbit”. Elton John and Bernie Taupin took home the award for Best Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from the film “Rocketman”, based on John’s life.
Other notable awards include Best Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir for “Joker”), Best Documentary Feature (Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert and Jeff Reichert for “American Factory”) and Achievement in Costume Design (Jacqueline Durran for “Little Women”).
Each nominee for Best Original Song also gave a performance, which included Elton John, Cynthia Erivo, Chrissy Metz, Randy Newman, and Idina Menzel. Menzel’s performance of “Into the Unknown” from “Frozen II” included singers from around the world who recorded translated versions of the film for international release.
Other performances included the brother-sister duo of Billie Eilish and Finneas, who performed during the “In Memoriam” portion of the show, as well as rapper Eminem.
