Westfield State history was made on December 12th as Senior Lucy Barrett eclipsed the 1000-point mark for her career. The Williamstown native secured her 1000th point on a 3rd quarter layup during a tough battle in the Woodward Center with Smith College. Barrett becomes the 16th player in Westfield State women’s basketball history to score 1000 career points and the first since Jill Valley in November of 2016.
As Barrett describes, she only had a few moments to soak it in before going back to the task at hand.
“[The moment was] kind of surreal and really incredible honestly,” Barrett said, “Definitely a cool accomplishment, but the focus was on getting the win so it was awesome to get but then it was focusing on ‘ok, let’s get the win now.”
Barrett entered the 2018-19campaign with 866 career points and had no intentions, even when entering college, of surpassing the millennium mark.
“Going into college…obviously it would be something cool to do, but it was never on my mind,” Barrett explains.“Heading into this year, people had been telling how it was doable, but it’s senior year and as it got closer, it was exciting but I tried to keep my focus on the team and on team wins and if it were to happen, it would happen when it did and to let the game come to me.”
After securing her 1000th point, Barrett would go on to score a career-high 32 points, and she leans on not worrying about making history for a great night.
“Every time that I had scored before, the crowd was going crazy and it definitely felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders,” Barrett details. “I knew people in the crowd and on my team had known that I was close, but it was such a big game that I could really focus on the team after that and being disciplined on the court.”
Barrett and the Owls will now try to focus on rebounding from the Christmas break, after a tough 4-5 start for the reigning three-time MASCAC champions.
“The league is coming for our necks and we have a solid crew of women that come in every day working hard,” Barrett explains. “We know we have a target on our backs which means we have to work even harder. We have to be the hardest working team in the MASCAC to uphold what people think that we’ll be able to do this year.”
