“Mission Accomplished”
Written by Phillip Slater
We were told it was over before our births
Jim Crow and the Klan were dead
Let’s raise a glass to our victory earned
As men still get shot in the head
We don’t see color or prejudice here
‘Side from grandma’s rants when her mood is sour
A product of her time, no doubt
Just like her peers that are still in power
But they’ll soon be gone, and along with them
Will go the specter of bigotry and hate
Surely it can’t possess the young
‘Cept the occasional classmate
It’s an old person’s disease, I assure you
No threat to us enlightened souls
‘Part from the odd teenage fascist
Who slipped down some online rabbit holes
Ah, but we can’t be privileged
It’s a flagrant lie, I’m told
“I have suffered hardships too
So that absolves the crimes of old!”
Why must you claim the promise is unfulfilled?
It’s all been done, the war is won,
The beast has since been killed
Don’t annoy us further with injustices long gone
Oh, wait? It happened yesterday?
Well still, the game is almost on!
