When attending Westfield events, whether it’s the lively activities on the green, the bustling club fairs, or the adrenaline-fueled late-night games, there is always a blue bird flitting about, impossible to miss. His bright yellow beak gleams beneath the stadium lights, and his cobalt feathers shimmer as he weaves through the crowd. One moment he’s perched beside the marching band, bobbing his head to the beat; the next, he’s darting toward a group of first-years, spreading laughter, cheers, and a strange, almost magical sense of belonging.
So who exactly is this owl who seems to be everywhere at once? It’s Nestor, the beloved, slightly mischievous, Westfield mascot.
Nestor’s silly presence is unescapable, but that’s precisely the point. There’s a certain warmth in the way he swoops down a hallway or pops out from behind a concession stand with a dramatic hoot. You can’t help but smile when he dances along the sidelines with a swagger that defies his oversized feet, photobombs group selfies with perfectly timed wing poses, or hands out high-fives that land with soft, feathery thwumps.
Whenever you see him swooping across the quad, a part of you wonders, what’s beneath that mask? Is it a student? One of the faculty or staff, secretly letting loose from their daily routines? Could it even be a complete stranger, sneaking in just to join the fun?
Perhaps that secrecy is intentional. Owls, after all, are creatures of mystery, creatures that watch silently from the shadows. Nestor embodies that same enigmatic presence on campus. Yet despite the secrecy surrounding him, his influence is unmistakable. Whether he appears at games, events, or simply in passing, Nestor brings a sense of unity, excitement, and school spirit that touches every student. His presence might be elusive, but its impact is unmistakably felt.
I began my owl-tracking endeavor by messaging an Instagram user, “fabianmorales.2027”, who had Nestor as their profile picture.
“Haha no it’s just my profile picture, if you want to know more about the mascot itself, I believe Student Affairs has the Nestor suit,” the user stated.
My trail led to Student Affairs, whom I messaged over Instagram DM. They responded, “Hi there! Typically the athletics or marketing department holds onto and handles Nestor.”
I messaged each department via Instagram DM immediately, as well as messaging the Westfield Football team account. Unfortunately, the Westfield Football team and the Marketing department did not respond to my avid search of the cobalt owl.
Although the Westfield Football account has yet to respond to my Nestor-based questioning, the Westfield Football quarterback, Miles Foerster, reflects on the importance of having a mascot.
“I think the mascot itself shows the spirit of the team, its energy and excitement for the game reflects our own excitement and enthusiasm for the sport we love to play,” Foerster explains.
“Knowing that during the game, it’s (Nestor) keeping our fans and crowds energy up improves our play. Having an invested crowd definitely can sway the outcome of a game,” Foerster continues.
“Shout out to Nestor, for bringing energy and joy into each game, keep on hunting!” Foerster ends.
Nestor’s presence is felt among all, whether its students, athletes, or family in the crowd. The blue feather-friend is the embodiment of school spirit, of pride, of Westfield.
My phone chimed, and the Athletics department had finally responded, “You’ll want to email the Associate Athletics Director, Nancy Bals . . . she’ll have more info on Nestor!”
After an extensive search to discover who resides beneath the mask, I found myself no closer to uncovering the true identity of Nestor. Despite reaching out to Student Affairs, the Athletics Department, and even members of the football team, every path led to a dead end. It seems that the secret is guarded with remarkable precision, almost as if Nestor himself wishes to remain hidden.
No one really knows, and maybe that’s the magic of Nestor. The mystery adds to his charm. He could be anyone, or everyone. Perhaps that’s the point: Nestor isn’t just one person. He is the laughter in the hallway, the excitement in the bleachers, and the spirit that makes Westfield feel like a home.
So the next time you see him gliding past, wings flapping and beak gleaming, don’t just wave, wonder.
