‘Fake Your Death’: that was the last song released by pop punk and rock band, My Chemical Romance, a year after their break-up on their greatest hits album titled, May Death Never Stop You. This wasn’t the first seed that was planted to possibly hint at an eventual return for the band. Many fans have noticed members make comments that indicate that their time as a band wouldn’t be over forever, such as wanting to follow in the footsteps of The Smashing Pumpkins career. The Smashing Pumpkins were together for twelve years and then got back together after six years. My Chemical Romance were together from 2001 until 2013, also twelve years. Now, after six years have gone by, My Chemical Romance have finally announced their return on Halloween, and have set the entire pop punk/rock scene ablaze with anticipation and excitement.
After their break up, they all went their separate ways and began their own projects. Lead singer, Gerard Way, has since been working on comic books, and the Netflix series Umbrella Academy. Frank Iero has been venturing on his own solo music projects and has released three albums. Ray Toro has quietly been working on his own music and released an album in 2016 that didn’t receive much traction or notice. Mikey Way was temporarily a part of a band known as Electric Century but is now collaborating with DC Comics working on quite a few projects.
The return of the band has seemed to come out of nowhere as well, especially after many of the band members have commented on the idea of a reunion and said that they have no plans because where they are currently in their lives. They are all working on their own projects and have all began to start families of their own, giving each one of them more responsibilities as fathers.
Earlier this year, Joe Jonas, part of the Jonas Brothers, actually made a comment in an interview where he reportedly saw My Chemical Romance rehearsing in a recording studio next to him and his brothers. Iero took it to Twitter and Instagram to react to his comments and made it clear that there were no such rehearsals happening and that the band was not reuniting, along with making fun of him in the process. However, since the band have announced their return, it would seem that Joe’s comments were true, right? Iero said in a missable tweet in response to a fan that Joe was still incorrect and it was a lucky mistake. What may have been a very early leak into the bands return could have spoiled everyone the incredible announcement made on Halloween, but thankfully they are now confirmed to be untrue.
Multiple shows have been announced for California, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, and everyone has noticed that the boys have not revealed a full world tour in celebration for their return. This has confused fans and has made them think that it will be a sort of “one-off” performance in these locations for fans willing to make the drive and pay very expensive prices to see the band make their long awaited return. Many have speculated and claimed to have learned that following their comeback shows and festivals, they will embark on a tour across the United States and many other countries. This would allow many fans who could not afford to travel to the California show or festivals outside of the country and search for a venue that is closer to home.
My Chemical Romance’s return has sparked the interest of many and their third album The Black Parade has since reentered the Billboard charts. Their popularity is skyrocketing and they have been attracting many more fans, providing more of a reason to plan a complete tour across the country. Even other popular bands have expressed their excitement and how they are enthusiastic about their future. My Chemical Romance’s return and how it has captured the interest of the internet and the excitement of many fans shows how popular they still are and the impact that they are making on many people.
